Multicentre, participant-blinded randomised trial in Australia: 104 people with two copies of the HFE C282Y variant, ferritin 300–1000 µg/L and raised transferrin saturation, iron reduction by erythrocytapheresis versus sham plasmapheresis. Iron reduction lowered the total fatigue score (MFIS) by 6.3 points compared with sham; the cognitive subscale differed, the physical and psychosocial subscales did not. The trial measured reported symptoms, not cirrhosis or survival.
